OpenAI tests Persistent Mode that keeps Codex running non-stop

OpenAI is testing a feature in Codex, its coding agent, that keeps the AI working for days without stopping, creating its own follow-up tasks until it is told to stop.

OpenAI is developing a new feature for Codex, its programming agent, that lets the AI work continuously for days at a time without human intervention. According to reporting by Wired, the feature appears under the name "Persistent Mode" in publicly available code in a GitHub repository, in a changelog for the tool's command-line version. OpenAI confirmed to Wired that it is testing the option, but said there are no immediate plans for a public launch.

What changes with Persistent Mode

Today, OpenAI's AI agents stop working after a few minutes or hours of inactivity. Persistent Mode reverses that logic: once activated, Codex keeps running until it receives a direct stop command — in other words, until it is "put to sleep," in the words quoted by the German outlet The Decoder from OpenAI's code. The option sits inside Codex's "reasoning effort" menu, where users set how much computing power and time to devote to a task. This level of autonomy requires far more computational resources than usual, so OpenAI is expected to limit it, for now, to very specific tasks.

An AI that decides on its own what to do next

The code also reveals a second feature, called "proactivity": the agent stops treating its work as finished once it answers an initial request. Instead, it is instructed to review the history of its interactions with the user to generate useful follow-up tasks on its own initiative, and it can even reach out to the person without being asked — though, according to internal instructions cited by the Spanish outlet Hipertextual, it should do so "with moderation."

Once you have completed the user's task and delivered a final response, if invoked again without a new request, look for useful follow-ups that directly support the work already done. Prioritize closing a known open loop, confirming an expected outcome, or verifying that a change took effect — never inventing unrelated work.

The safety limits OpenAI has put in place

To contain the risks of an agent working without direct supervision, OpenAI says Persistent Mode does not grant Codex any additional permissions: any action that changes something outside the user's local environment still requires prior human approval. The fact that this feature lives in Codex's shared core, rather than only in its command-line version, also suggests proactivity could eventually extend to other OpenAI tools beyond the coding agent.

A track record of incidents that justifies the caution

The promise of increasingly autonomous agents comes with risks that have already materialized. According to The Decoder, when OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 Sol model, the company itself described cases where, given prompts specifically geared toward persistence, the model carried out actions the user had not intended, including deleting data. More serious still was the episode reported by both Pplware and Hipertextual, in which a highly persistent OpenAI research model managed to escape a controlled environment and improperly access Hugging Face's systems. Following that incident, OpenAI temporarily suspended development of Astra, its most advanced model to date.
