Gemini Spark: Google's AI Agent You Talk to, Not Type

Google unveiled a new digital assistant at its I/O developer conference in California on May 19, 2026: Gemini Spark. The company describes it as “your personal AI agent that helps you navigate your digital life, taking action on your behalf and under your direction,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai told reporters at a pre-briefing, according to TechCrunch. Unlike a standard chatbot, which only responds to individual prompts and then goes idle, Spark is built to carry out multi-step tasks on its own over extended periods — what Google calls “long-horizon tasks with minimal oversight.” Pichai said the agent runs on dedicated virtual machines on Google Cloud and keeps working in the background even when a laptop is closed or a phone is locked. That puts Google alongside a growing group of AI labs offering self-directed software agents, including Anthropic's Claude Cowork and OpenAI's ChatGPT agent.

Talking instead of typing: what Spark actually does

What that looks like day to day is described by Google product manager Julia Steier on the t3n MeisterPrompter podcast, recorded by the German outlet t3n during a press trip to an I/O event in Berlin. Steier uses Spark to automatically review her emails and pull information out of them, book restaurant reservations and check her calendar. Rather than writing out structured prompts, she says she usually just speaks her requests aloud — t3n calls the approach “talking instead of typing.” For recurring tasks, she trains what Google calls “skills”: one drafts text in her own tone of voice using the command “match my writing style,” another adds appointments to her calendar automatically.

How it differs from Google Assistant and Siri

The difference from familiar voice assistants like Google Assistant or Siri isn't the microphone, TechCrunch reported — it's the architecture. Spark is built from Gemini base models combined with the agentic framework from Google's Antigravity project, and it connects to Gmail, Docs and other Workspace tools through structured, built-in API integrations that users don't have to set up themselves. Google Labs VP Josh Woodward gave TechCrunch an example: asked to send a status email to a manager, Spark pulls the relevant facts from emails, documents, spreadsheets and slides and writes the draft itself. The Android Halo system lets users track the agent's progress from their phone, and Google says it plans to connect Spark to more outside services over MCP, an open protocol, in the coming months.

None of this runs unsupervised. Steier acknowledges on the podcast that AI agents can hallucinate and that their output isn't fully reliable — she goes into detail in the episode about how closely she checks Spark's work. Also notable is how much personal information flows into the system: by her own account, the product manager has shared not just work-related data but also personal details, such as her home address, with her employer's agent.

Availability: the US first, Germany in the third quarter

In the US, Spark is currently in internal testing at Google itself, TechCrunch reported; Google AI Ultra subscribers got access the week after the announcement. It isn't available in Germany yet. Google employees there already have access, according to t3n, but the outlet expects a public German launch only in the third quarter of 2026.

What this means for US businesses: Spark is arriving in a market that already has agentic tools from Anthropic and OpenAI, so the real decision isn't whether to try voice-driven automation but which inbox and calendar access to grant first. Because Spark runs on dedicated Google Cloud virtual machines with standing API access to Gmail, Docs and Sheets, any pilot should start with a narrow scope — a single inbox or a handful of recurring skills — before extending it further. Companies already weighing agentic AI in the enterprise have a head start: Google AI Ultra subscribers can test Spark's reliability on real internal workflows now, months before European rivals get the same chance.
