Connecting your tools
Connecting Shopify to an AI agent
It is the simplest connector in the catalogue to plug in, and the most strictly bounded. You paste the store's address: Shopify opens its storefront with no key, no app to create, no authentication. In exchange, it opens only the storefront — no orders, no customers, no administration. Knowing where that boundary runs stops you building on a capability that does not exist.
1. What the agent does with the store
Every Shopify store publishes its own public entry point. The agent reaches it as a well-informed visitor would:
- Read the catalogue. The products, their variants, their displayed availability, their prices.
- Read the product pages. Descriptions, specifications — enough to answer precisely “does this model come in blue in a size 42”.
- Read the terms of sale. Delivery, returns: the information customer service is asked for most often.
- Prepare a cart. Put together a selection, to be presented to the customer for validation.
It is the tool of an agent that advises and answers, not of an agent that administers.
2. Where access stops, exactly
It has to be said without hedging, because it is the main cause of disappointment when learnt too late: this connector opens the storefront, and nothing else.
- Orders do not go through it. Order history is not reachable by this route.
- Nor do customers. No customer record, no personal data from your Shopify base.
- Administration stays closed. Changing a product, a price, a stock level: out of this connector's reach.
For anything touching orders and customers, the right architecture is to work in your CRM — HubSpot or nullbot's CRM — rather than force a door that was not built for it.
3. The address does everything, and it belongs to one store only
Connecting comes down to pasting the address. Two useful details:
The .myshopify.com address always answers. It is the technical form of every store, and it is the one to prefer when connecting. A custom domain also works when it genuinely serves the storefront.
That address designates one store and one only. There is no connecting “to Shopify” in general: an agent is connected to your store, and another store would need another connection. It is clear-cut, and it is comfortable — the scope is readable in the address itself.
4. The cart can be changed without authentication
Here is the point that deserves your attention, and it follows directly from how simple connecting is: since the storefront opens without authentication, the cart can be handled without authentication.
This does not put your store at risk — it is how any online storefront works, where any visitor fills a cart. But it does mean a cart prepared by an agent commits nobody until a person has validated it.
The practical consequence is simple, and it is our recommendation: keep human approval active on anything touching an order. An agent that proposes a selection to validate helps the customer; an agent that triggers something resembling an order on its own creates a dispute.
5. What it changes over time
The effect shows first on repetitive questions, the ones that occupy customer service without producing anything.
- Week 1. Questions about availability, size and delivery times get an exact answer, drawn from the real catalogue rather than from a copied sheet that has aged.
- Month 3. Advice becomes possible: offering the alternative when an item is missing, rather than answering “out of stock” and losing the sale.
- Year 2. The most recurring questions are identified, and they end up correcting the product pages themselves — that is the real benefit, and it lasts.
No quantified gain is promised here: it depends on your catalogue and your volume of enquiries.
6. Frequently asked questions
Do I have to create a Shopify app?
No. You paste the store's address and that is all: Shopify opens the storefront with no key, no app and no authentication. It is the fastest connection in the catalogue.
Can the agent see my orders?
No. This route exposes only the storefront: catalogue, product pages, terms of sale and cart. Orders, customers and the store's administration do not go through it. For commercial follow-up, the right place is your CRM.
Can an agent place an order on a customer's behalf?
It can prepare a cart, which commits nobody. We recommend keeping human approval on anything touching an order: validation must remain a person's act, otherwise a dispute is guaranteed.
What if my store is not on Shopify?
The catalogue includes other routes for commerce: Stripe and PayPal for payments, Square, WooCommerce through WordPress. And sites built in nullbot take payment directly, with no third-party store — another way of answering the same need.
